In response to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's policy of allowing electronic medical records to go to the cloud and adopting the FHIR standard policy, Microsoft Taiwan held a press conference on "Building a New Look in Future Healthcare – Microsoft Smart Healthcare Press Conference" on the 26th, determined to cooperate with local industry, government and academic partners by integrating Microsoft's cloud for healthcare to promote Taiwan so as to become a demonstration model for future medical care. Pang Yiming, Director of the Department of Information Management of the Ministry of Health and Welfare; Hsu Chienyeh, Chairman of the Taiwan Association for Medical Informatics; Yu Chungjen, President of the NTUH Hsin-Chu Branch; Chen Houchuan, Vice President of the Taoyuan General Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Chou Teying, Director of the Department of Pathological and Laboratory Medicine of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, as well as a number of leading corporate partners in Taiwan's ICT industry, participated in the grand event, not only witnessing Taiwan's smart healthcare entering a new era, but also announcing their commitments to 100 smart healthcare solutions in two years.

Department of Information Management of the Ministry of Health and Welfare Pang Yiming, said: "The Ministry of Health and Welfare is actively promoting the healthcare reforms such as electronic medical records on the cloud to strengthen the exchange of medical information. Therefore, it is necessary to take advantage of Taiwan's strong scientific and technological strength to develop key basic technologies and to be in line with international standards. We hope to bring Taiwan's high-quality smart healthcare services to the world through the close cooperation between Taiwan's medical and technology industries, creating a Triple Win."

Sun Chikang, general manager of Microsoft Taiwan, said: "The epidemic has accelerated the digital transformation of various industries, and the medical industry has more urgent needs and timeliness for the cloud. The connection of patients, medical teams and data is the foundation for realizing smart healthcare. Therefore, Microsoft Healthcare Cloud is people-oriented and creates a flexible, interoperable and secure platform. As Taiwan enters a critical decade in which electronic medical records are allowed to go to the cloud, we are delighted to work with Taiwan's outstanding medical institutions and top ICT partners to make the complex medical ecosystem more complete. We will promote Taiwan to become a future medical model with innovative, efficient, and easy-to-use medical solutions."

The effective integration and interoperability of medical databases plays a key role in the development of smart medical care. To drive healthcare transformation, Microsoft launched the Azure Healthcare API (formerly known as Azure API for FHIR) to facilitate the exchange of healthcare data. Currently, 6 hospitals, 7 schools, 19 companies and 2 legal persons in Taiwan are applying it in the second FHIR joint test. Hsu Chienyeh, Chairman of the Taiwan Association for Medical Informatics, shared: "The international medical data exchange standard FHIR has high data interoperability, so it is an important basis for electronic medical records on the cloud. We are pleased to participate in this FHIR joint test, cooperate with Microsoft to convert the health passbook to FHIR format, and successfully use the cloud service of Azure Healthcare API, which not only ensures information security, but also strengthens back-end integration, IoMT connection and machine learning applications. We will continue to explore the capabilities of Taiwan's industry and academia in medical information, hoping to break down the barriers of data communication in the future and improve the interoperability of domestic medical data internationally.”

Designed for the medical industry
Efficient and secure smart cloud platform

In order to allow different industries to have tailor-made cloud services that meet individual needs, the Microsoft Industrial Cloud Service, designed with the concept of modularization and flexible expansion, was born; Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare is designed based on the needs of medical application scenarios. It has been certified by HIPAA, HITRUST and other medical information security regulations, and meets the highest standards of compliance in the industry. On the existing data resources and systems of the hospital, through the Azure Healthcare APIs supporting FHIR and DICOM file formats, the hospital can quickly collect, standardize, exchange and integrate a large amount of medical data, and accelerate the creation of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT).

Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare combines Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Microsoft Power Platform; connects custom solutions from Microsoft's ecosystem of healthcare industry partners; builds on Microsoft Healthcare's three goals, and extends nine implementations scenes:

  • Improve interaction with patients: use data analysis to provide comprehensive patient insights, establish personalized care, and strengthen telemedicine services to optimize the doctor-patient relationship.
  • Empower medical colleagues to collaborate with each other: connect the intelligent process to the new generation of HIS system, accelerate the medical team collaboration process, and improve the efficiency of medical team resource coordination, which can be applied to long-term patient monitoring.
  • Optimize medical data insights: Integrate data from various systems and establish data correlations, thereby generating data insights that can be used to predict risks, improve patient care quality and operational efficiency, and enhance operational and clinical analysis.

Healthcare Partner Ecosystem Continues to Thrive
Leading Taiwan's Smart Healthcare to the International Cup

Taiwan's medical and technological capabilities are abundant, and Microsoft's medical ecosystem in Taiwan is also growing. Today, many industry partners participated in this press conference, including Advantech, ASUS AI R&D Center, ATGENOMIX, Brobridge, Chunghwa System Integration, Far East Medical Electronics Technology, Freedom Systems, Galaxy Software Services, Information Security Service Digital United, KenKone Medical, Muen Biomedical and Optoelectronic Technologies, Syspower, Varian Medical Systems Taiwan, WeBIM Services, WiAdvance as well as other VIPs. Microsoft, together with diverse and numerous ecosystem partners, announced that it will create 100 smart medical solutions within two years, promote the transformation and upgrading of Taiwan's medical industry, integrate smart medical applications into international standards, and develop global business opportunities.

Smart applications in the medical industry are ahead of the industry Creating a healthier and more sustainable life for Taiwanese people and medical staff

Microsoft Taiwan continues to work with leading medical organizations and partners in the industry to develop a variety of smart medical application solutions, including the National Taiwan University Hospital's participation in Microsoft's global AI for Health program, which uses Azure HPC (High-performance computing) for the world's largest genetic database UK Bio Bank to perform large-scale calculations. Recently, it was also published that certain genes could explain 60% of pneumonia mortality. In addition, China Medical University Hospital uses Microsoft Azure and cooperates with five domestic medical centers to develop the most advanced AI medical applications, and uses Microsoft Power BI to visualize data analysis to improve doctors' diagnostic capabilities and medication monitoring. It can even save the lives of ICU patients. During the severe epidemic, the Center of Intelligent Healthcare of National Taiwan University Hospital teamed up with Microsoft Taiwan, Industrial Technology Research Institute, and Taidoc Technology to jointly develop the "Blood Oxygen Real-Time Monitoring Platform". They also cooperated with the Taoyuan City Government and the Ministry of Taoyuan Hospital to use it in the centralized quarantine station and negative pressure isolation room of the hospital to help medical staff to monitor the physiological changes of isolated patients in real time. In addition, the HoloLens mixed reality headset is used to create a "mixed reality ward" to protect the health and safety of medical staff and patients.

For more Microsoft smart healthcare solutions, welcome to visit Microsoft's exhibition at Healthcare EXPO.TAIWAN (Booth L418, 4th Floor, Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1) from December 2nd (Thursday) to 5th (Sunday) to experience the future hospital blueprint drawn by Microsoft Taiwan and other ecosystem partners such as ATGENOMIX, Galaxy Software Services, Muen Biomedical and Optoelectronic Technologies, Syspower, WeBIM Services, WiAdvance, etc.
